The holiday season is among the busiest travel periods of the year. However, it’s also a time when home burglary, theft and fire risks increase. Why is this the case? What can you do to keep your home more secure while you are away?
Home safety isn’t something you only do while you are at home. It’s an ongoing process. The more care you take to safeguard the property, the lower your security and insurance risks.
Holiday Home Security Risks
During the holidays, you’ll probably have a lot of unique occurrences at your home. You might put up seasonal decorations, or host large parties. Or, you might shut down the home and travel out of town. Regardless of your plans, you’ll face a few unique, enhanced safety risks. Consider some of these:
- Property theft often increases around the holidays. For example, thieves might target homes to steal Christmas gifts left in (or outside) the home.
- Fire threats often increase around this time of year. Fires might result from fireplace use or from ignited, dry Christmas trees.
- If you leave your home alone, you’ll often leave it exposed to property damage threats. So, if you are gone for a significant time, then there are more opportunities for hazards to occur.
Often, your property insurance can help you pay to repair a damaged home or replace lost property. However, the best course of action is to keep these mishaps from occurring in the first place.
Keeping Your Home Safe
Whether staying home or hitting the road this year, take the following safety steps at home.
- Ensure that the electricity, heat and other internal systems will run while you are gone. If these items need maintenance, schedule this care early in the season.
- Do not leave live foliage inside your home. If you use a live Christmas tree, keep it hydrated, and don’t place it near open flames. Remove the tree from the home before you travel.
- When receiving gifts, guard them with care. Don’t leave packages or mail easily visible on your porch. Try to create a safe area for delivery services to leave the items. Do not openly advertise if you have received a new item of extreme value.
- Whatever your home’s security mechanisms, arm them at all times. Lock your doors and set your alarm system. Consider adding additional protection like motion-activated lighting or alarm tripwires to alert you in case of an attempted break-in.
With appropriate care, you can reduce your home’s safety risks this holiday season. Therefore, your chances of filing a homeowners insurance claim will likely drop. That could save you a lot of money in the end.
